1962 Topps #72 Bob's Pupils
On this card: Steve Boros, Bob Scheffing, Jake Wood

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card - Managers' Dream (#18, Mantle and Mays), AL & NL Homer Kings (#401, Maris and Cepeda) and Rival League Relief Aces (#423, Face and Wilhelm) among them.
The story on this card
Card 72 in the 1962 Topps set is a first-series combination card with a teaching hook: Topps posed Tigers manager Bob Scheffing with the two young infielders who broke through in his first Detroit season, third baseman Steve Boros and second baseman Jake Wood, and titled it Bob's Pupils. Scheffing had inherited a sixth-place club and pushed the 1961 Tigers to 101 wins and second place, eight games behind the Yankees. Boros, in his first full big league season, had the best year of his career despite six weeks lost to a broken collarbone, and rookie Wood led the American League with 14 triples and ranked third in stolen bases.
Steve Boros: Michigan bonus baby, bookish Tigers third baseman, and later a lifer whose nearly fifty years in the game took him from minor league dugouts to managing the Athletics and the Padres with an Apple II in the clubhouse. A catcher who spent most of his playing career with the Cubs, Scheffing managed in Chicago and then Detroit, and after leaving the dugout he climbed the Mets front office to become their general manager. Jake Wood - Detroit's speedy leadoff second baseman of the early 1960s: a 1961 rookie sensation who led the American League in triples, finished third in stolen bases three straight years, and was the first African-American regular Detroit's own farm system produced.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
