1962 Topps #62 Steve Boros

About Steve Boros
Two first-series cards carry Boros: his own number 62, and number 72, a combination card that groups him with Detroit manager Bob Scheffing and second baseman Jake Wood. The summer they were sold turned odd for him. His average sank to .228, yet he walked often enough to hold a .331 on-base mark, and his power jumped from five home runs the year before to sixteen. On August 6 in Cleveland he hit three home runs in one game, two of them off Sam McDowell, and the Tigers still lost. Two weeks later came his first big-league grand slam, struck in the first inning against Washington.
Steve Boros grew up in Flint, Michigan, the eldest of five children in a Hungarian-American family; his father had arrived from Hungary alone as a teenager, and his parents opened a small grocery in 1946, with the family living above the store. He played football, basketball and baseball at Flint Northern High School, then hit .324 and .381 in two varsity seasons at the University of Michigan and was an All-Big Ten third baseman in 1957. Teammates elected him captain for the following year, but that June he signed with the Detroit Tigers for a $25,000 bonus, finishing a bachelor's degree in English at odd hours between seasons. He played all or parts of seven major league seasons at third base for the Tigers, Cubs and Reds, batting .245 with 26 home runs and 149 RBIs. His life in the game ran close to fifty years in all: minor league manager, base-stealing instructor, big-league coach, manager of the Athletics and the Padres, then scout and executive, closing with Detroit in 2004. He died in 2010.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
