About Terry Fox

Card #196 closes the second series. It comes two ways: the standard printing and a green-tint version from the reprint Topps ordered at a second plant when demand outran the first run. Behind it is 1961 - 5-2, 12 saves and a staff-best 1.41 ERA in 39 games for a Tiger club that won 101 and still finished second - and September 17, when Roger Maris took him deep for his 58th home run in the twelfth.

Terry Fox was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent seven major league seasons, 1960 through 1966, with the Milwaukee Braves, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. Born July 31, 1935, in Chicago and raised in Midlothian, he graduated from Thornton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois, in 1953 and took a Class C contract from the Atlanta Crackers after four tryout camps; the Braves picked him out of the Atlanta organization at no cost after the 1955 season. Two summers with the New Iberia Pelicans of the Evangeline League made his name, 13-4 in the first and 21-12 in the second, and Atlanta, Jacksonville, Topeka, Austin and Sacramento followed before Milwaukee called him up in September 1960. That December the Braves shipped him to Detroit with Bill Bruton, Dick Brown and Chuck Cottier for Frank Bolling and Neil Chrisley, and he became the Tigers' late-inning man for five seasons, leading the club in saves in 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1965. He never started a major league game: all 248 of his appearances came out of the bullpen, and he finished 29-19 with a 2.99 ERA, 59 saves and 185 strikeouts. Fox settled in New Iberia, married Loreauville native Shirley Dugas and spent 26 years with Texaco starting in 1968.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
