About Eddie Bressoud

Bressoud's first Red Sox card, #504, sits in the sixth series of the 1962 set. Its back covers a thin last year in San Francisco: .211 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 59 games, a nagging leg injury early and Jose Pagan standing between him and the shortstop job. Boston bought in anyway, sending Don Buddin to Houston on November 26, 1961 to land him, and told Bressoud the position was his unless he lost it. He had never set foot in Fenway Park, but as a strictly right-handed pull hitter he liked what he had heard about the wall.

Eddie Bressoud (born Edward Francis Bressoud) was a shortstop who played twelve major league seasons, 1956-1967, with the New York and San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals. A Los Angeles native signed by the Giants out of George Washington High School in 1950, he served in the Marine Corps from January 1953 to January 1955 before debuting on June 14, 1956. Houston made him the first pick of the October 1961 expansion draft and dealt him to Boston that November for Don Buddin, and his bat came alive in Fenway Park: a career-high 68 RBI in 1962, 20 home runs in 1963, and in 1964 a .293 average and the lone All-Star nod of his career. He went to the Mets after the 1965 season and to St. Louis on April 1, 1967, finishing on the Cardinals' championship club before spending 24 years teaching and coaching at De Anza College, where he took over the baseball program that same fall. He retired with a .252 average, 94 home runs and 365 RBI across 1,186 games, 1,002 of them at shortstop.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
