About Juan Marichal
Card #505 sits in the sixth series and reports a 1961 season injuries kept modest: 13-10 with a 3.89 ERA in 27 starts, nine of them complete, with three shutouts and 124 strikeouts. The control was already there, 48 walks in the whole season, but the twenty-win years had not started. Collectors know this back for its error, since it prints the wrong birth year for a pitcher born October 20, 1937 in Laguna Verde, in the Monte Cristi province of the Dominican Republic.
Juan Marichal, the Dominican Dandy, pitched sixteen major league seasons from 1960 to 1975, all but the last two for the San Francisco Giants. Born October 20, 1937 in the village of Laguna Verde, he learned the game from an older brother using golf balls sewn inside cloth and bats cut from tree branches. Across the 1960s he won 191 games, more than any pitcher in baseball and 27 clear of runner-up Bob Gibson. He won twenty or more six times, every one of those years carrying an ERA under 2.50 and better than 200 strikeouts, and he led the National League in wins twice, complete games twice, shutouts twice and ERA once. He was named to nine All-Star teams and was Most Valuable Player of the 1965 game, leaving eight All-Star appearances with a 0.50 ERA. On August 22, 1965 he struck Dodgers catcher John Roseboro with his bat during a Candlestick Park brawl, drawing a suspension and a then-record National League fine; the two later became close friends, and Roseboro's public forgiveness helped carry him to Cooperstown on the third ballot. He retired with 243 wins, 244 complete games, 2,303 strikeouts and a 2.89 ERA, never winning a Cy Young Award, and in 1983 became the first Dominican-born player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
