About Whitey Herzog

Card #513 belongs to the sixth series. Issued during his second Baltimore summer, it looks back on the first, the best of his eight big-league years:.291 with 5 homers, 35 RBI and 50 walks in 113 games as the regular right fielder on an Orioles club whose 95 wins set a franchise record.

Whitey Herzog was born Dorrel Norman Elvert Herzog in New Athens, Illinois, and signed with the New York Yankees straight out of high school in 1949. The nickname came in the Yankees' farm town of McAlester, Oklahoma, where a sportscaster decided his light blond hair matched that of New York pitcher Bob "White Rat" Kuzava. The Yankees traded him away in April 1956 without ever playing him, and the left-handed-hitting outfielder reached the majors that spring with the Washington Senators. Kansas City bought him in May 1958, Baltimore traded for him before the 1961 season and Detroit after 1962; he closed an eight-year career in 1963 at .257 with 25 home runs and 172 RBI in 634 games. The second act dwarfed the first. Named the Mets' director of player development in 1967, he stocked the system that fed the 1969 champions, then managed Kansas City to three straight American League West titles from 1976 to 1978 and St. Louis to three pennants and the 1982 World Series, running the speed, pitching and defense attack fans called Whiteyball. National League Manager of the Year in 1985, he finished 1,281-1,125-3 as a manager, entered the Hall of Fame in 2010 on a Veterans Committee vote, and died in 2024 at 92.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
