About Al Lopez

Card #458 follows a 1962 season in which the White Sox went 85-77 and finished fifth, the only time in his nine Chicago years that one of his clubs placed lower than fourth - and even that team finished eight games over .500. The card is a manager-subset issue from the set's sixth series, which makes it a semi-high number. The season it reports was Lopez's twelfth as a major league manager, counting his six years running Cleveland.

Al Lopez was a Spanish-American catcher and manager born in Tampa, Florida, in 1908, the son of Spanish immigrants who had settled in the city's Ybor City cigar district. He caught 19 major league seasons between 1928 and 1947 for Brooklyn, Boston, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, earning All-Star selections in 1934 and 1941 and retiring with a major league record 1,918 games caught, a mark that stood until Bob Boone passed it in 1987. He batted .261 with 51 home runs; his value was defense and handling pitchers. Lopez began managing at Indianapolis in 1948, took over Cleveland in 1951, and ran the Chicago White Sox from 1957 through 1965 and again in parts of 1968 and 1969. His 1954 Indians won a then-American League record 111 games and his 1959 'Go-Go' White Sox took the pennant, the only two clubs to interrupt the Yankees' run of American League titles from 1949 through 1964. He never had a losing record in 18 full seasons as a manager, and his .584 winning percentage ranks among the best in major league history. Known as 'El Senor' for his Spanish ancestry and gentlemanly manner, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1977.
