1963 Topps #497 Bennie Daniels

About Bennie Daniels
The 1963 card, #497, sits in the sixth series and carries a semi-high designation. Daniels was in his third Washington season by then, working 168 2/3 innings across 35 appearances and 24 starts for a club that finished 56-106 and last in the American League. His record slipped to 5-10, though he did shut out Minnesota on two hits along the way.
Bennie Daniels Jr. was born June 17, 1932, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and came west with his family to Compton, California, in 1945. He grew to 6-feet-2, starred in baseball, basketball and track at Compton High School, and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in July 1951. A Class C start at Great Falls, two years in the Army during the Korean War era, and a long climb through the farm system led to a 17-8 year for the Hollywood Stars in 1957 and a September call-up; his first big-league start came in the last major-league game played at Ebbets Field. On May 23, 1960, his second-inning single off Sandy Koufax was the only hit Pittsburgh managed in a 1-0 loss, and he drew a half-share of the champion Pirates' World Series money that fall. He moved to the expansion Washington Senators for 1961 and won 37 games there across five seasons. Daniels finished 45-76 with a 4.44 ERA and 471 strikeouts in 230 games, spent 1966 with Triple-A Hawaii, and settled back in Compton, where he worked at a Los Angeles county hospital and taught fundamentals to Little Leaguers.
