1963 Topps #568 Bob Sadowski

About Bob Sadowski
The Angels took Sadowski from the White Sox in the Rule 5 draft on November 26, 1962, and used him more in the outfield than the infield: 23 games in right field and two in left, against seven at third base and three at second. He played 88 games, batted .250 with six doubles, a home run and 22 RBI in 144 at-bats, and drew his only ejection on record when Hank Soar rang him up on a called third strike on June 28. It was his last big league season; the Angels sold him to Toronto of the International League the following April. Topps pictured him with the Angels on #568, a seventh-series high number. His rookie card had come out a year earlier.
Robert Frank Sadowski, nicknamed Bo, was a St. Louis-born infielder and outfielder who played parts of four major league seasons between 1960 and 1963. Born January 15, 1937, he signed with his hometown Cardinals in 1955 and came up the minor league ladder as a second baseman and shortstop before settling in at third base and in the outfield. His entire Cardinals career was a single game, on September 16, 1960; three days later St. Louis traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies in the deal that brought back Don Landrum. The Phillies shipped him to the Chicago White Sox in a December 1961 swap for Andy Carey and Frank Barnes, and he finished his big league run with the Los Angeles Angels. Over those parts of four seasons he batted .222 with 73 hits, nine doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 46 RBI, and he hit a far healthier .267 across nearly 1,400 minor league games. He batted left-handed, threw right-handed, managed in the Minnesota Twins' farm system in 1972, and died in St. Louis in January 2017 at 79.
