About Jim Duffalo

The 1963 Topps set put Duffalo at #567, again in the seventh and last series - high numbers - and by now his rookie card was a year behind him. The San Francisco season that unfolded around the card's release was the best of his career to that point: 34 appearances, five of them starts, a 4-2 record, two saves and a 2.87 ERA, with 55 strikeouts in 75 1/3 innings. He gave up just 56 hits over that span.

James Francis Duffalo was born November 25, 1935 in Helvetia, Pennsylvania, and pitched all or part of five major league seasons, 1961 through 1965, most of them with the San Francisco Giants. A right-hander used chiefly in relief, he entered the Pittsburgh Pirates' farm system in 1955, won 17 games as a rookie in the Class D Georgia-Florida League and 16 more the next year in the Class B Carolina League before the Pirates sent him to the Giants during the 1958 season. He debuted on April 12, 1961 at age 25, entering with two on and two out in the ninth and retiring Roberto Clemente to save a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh. He was a member of the 1962 National League champion Giants but did not appear in that year's World Series, and he closed out his big league time with Cincinnati in 1965. Duffalo finished 15-8 with six saves, 210 strikeouts and a 3.39 ERA in 141 games, 119 of them for San Francisco, starting 14 and relieving in 127. He pitched seven more minor league seasons before retiring in 1972 and briefly coached in the Giants' farm system.
