1963 Topps #354 Dom Zanni

About Dom Zanni
Number 354 falls in the fourth series, another ordinary mid-set slot, and it still lists him with the White Sox, a team he had left on May 5. Chicago used him five times that spring for 4.1 innings and an 8.31 ERA, then shipped him to Cincinnati for Jim Brosnan, the reliever who had already published The Long Season and Pennant Race and who would close out his own career in Chicago that same year. The move revived Zanni: 31 appearances for Fred Hutchinson's fifth-place Reds, 43 innings, a 1-1 record, 16 games finished, five saves and a 4.19 ERA in Pete Rose's rookie season.
Dominick Thomas Zanni, a right-handed pitcher born in the Bronx on March 1, 1932, came out of Boys High School in Brooklyn and signed with his hometown New York Giants as an amateur free agent before the 1951 season. He spent most of the 1950s climbing the minors, throwing a no-hitter for Sioux City of the Western League in June 1954 and helping the Phoenix Giants win the 1958 Pacific Coast League title, which earned him a September call-up and a debut win over St. Louis on September 28, 1958. He was a bullpen man almost from the start, with only three starts in 111 big-league games, and he pitched parts of seven seasons between 1958 and 1966 for the Giants, Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds, finishing 9-6 with a 3.79 ERA, ten saves and 148 strikeouts over 183 innings. Winters took him to the Dominican Republic and to Puerto Rico, where after the 1960 season he went 6-0 with a 2.73 ERA. Following a 1967 season with the minor league Buffalo Bisons he left the game, spent 27 years in the insurance business, and died in Massapequa, New York, in 2017 at 85.
