1963 Topps #295 Ed Roebuck

About Ed Roebuck
The 1962 season is what collectors get here: 64 games, a 10-2 record, nine saves and a 3.09 ERA across 119 1/3 innings, with the appearance and win totals both career highs and the only two MVP votes he ever received. He was the Dodgers' bullpen ace through a 162-game tie with San Francisco, then worked all three games of the playoff, allowing no runs and two hits over his first two outings before the ninth-inning collapse in the finale charged him with only his second loss in twelve decisions. Card #295 in the 1963 Topps set, from the fourth print series and issued with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ed Roebuck was a right-handed relief pitcher from East Millsboro, Pennsylvania, who signed with the Dodgers out of Brownsville High School in 1949 and gave the organization eleven big league seasons. He reached Brooklyn in 1955 after three years at Triple-A Montreal, and as a rookie he worked 47 games behind relief ace Clem Labine and led the pennant winners with 12 saves. He pitched in the 1955 World Series, the only one Brooklyn ever won, and again in 1956. A sore shoulder ended his 1958 season and a year in the minors followed in 1959, but he came back to pitch four more seasons for Los Angeles before trades carried him to Washington and then Philadelphia. He finished 52-31 with 62 saves and a 3.35 ERA in 460 games, all but one of them in relief. Roebuck was also renowned as one of the game's finest fungo hitters, and he was the man Walter O'Malley sent out to launch sky-high flies when the Astrodome's architect needed to know how tall to build the roof. He scouted for nearly four decades afterward and earned a second ring with the 2004 Red Sox.
