1963 Topps #474 Jack Fisher

About Jack Fisher
Card #474 in the 1963 set is Fisher's only Topps card as a Giant, a series-6 semi-high. It reports his last Orioles season, 1962, when he went 7-9 with a 5.09 ERA - by far the worst mark of his career to that point. He threw only 152 innings that year, down from 196 the season before. Baltimore sent him west that December 15, packaging him with Billy Hoeft and Jimmie Coker for Stu Miller, John Orsino and Mike McCormick.
Jack Fisher was a right-handed pitcher from Frostburg, Maryland, who debuted for the Baltimore Orioles on April 14, 1959, at age 20 and pitched eleven seasons for the Orioles, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds. He finished 86-139 with a 4.06 ERA, 1,017 strikeouts and nine shutouts in 400 games, and his lone winning season was 1960, when he went 12-11 for the young Orioles rotation nicknamed the 'Kiddie Korps.' He is remembered most for three pitches: Ted Williams' 521st and last home run, struck in Williams' final major-league at-bat on September 28, 1960; Roger Maris' 60th on September 26, 1961, which tied Babe Ruth's single-season record; and the first home run hit at Shea Stadium, by Willie Stargell, on April 17, 1964. Fisher led the National League in losses in 1965 and 1967. Hoyt Wilhelm gave him the nickname 'Fat Jack,' which he later hung on his Easton, Pennsylvania restaurant. The Angels released him on Opening Day 1970.
