1963 Topps #487 John Roseboro

About John Roseboro
#487 lands in the sixth series, which makes it a semi-high number. Behind it sits a season in which Roseboro handled a staff that led the National League with a 2.85 earned run average, and the Dodgers took the pennant by six games over St. Louis. In the World Series opener he turned on a Whitey Ford curveball for a three-run homer behind Sandy Koufax's 15 strikeouts, and Los Angeles swept the Yankees in four straight.
John Roseboro was an American catcher who played in the major leagues from 1957 through 1970, almost all of it with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. Born May 13, 1933 in Ashland, Ohio, he signed with Brooklyn in 1952 and spent five years in the minors before reaching Brooklyn in June 1957. He inherited the Dodgers' catching job in 1958 after a car accident ended Roy Campanella's career, and he held it through 1967. A four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, he caught four Dodgers pennant winners and three championship clubs, and Sandy Koufax said that with Roseboro out there he never felt alone. So quiet that the game nicknamed him "Gabby," he is still best known for August 22, 1965, when Giants pitcher Juan Marichal hit him over the head with a bat. Minnesota acquired him after the 1967 season, and he caught the 1969 American League West champion Twins before a final year with the Washington Senators. He finished with 1,585 games, a .249 average, 104 home runs and 548 runs batted in, and died in Los Angeles on August 16, 2002.
