About Larry Sherry

1963 shrank Sherry's role. He worked 36 games, half of them as the finisher, went 2-6 with a 3.73 ERA and saved only three. When the Dodgers swept the Yankees that October, Walt Alston needed just four pitchers - Koufax, Drysdale, Podres and Ron Perranoski - and the bullpen's 1959 hero never got the call. It proved his last year in Los Angeles: on April 9, 1964, just before the new season, the Dodgers sent him to Detroit for outfielder Lou Johnson and $10,000. Card #565 sits in the seventh series, a high-number run that makes the 1963 set hard to finish.

Larry Sherry (born July 25, 1935, in Los Angeles; died December 17, 2006, in Mission Viejo, California) was a right-handed relief pitcher who worked in the major leagues from 1958 to 1968 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and California Angels. Born with clubfeet that needed surgery in infancy and corrective shoes afterward, he starred at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, then spent years grinding through the minors until his older brother, catcher Norm Sherry, helped him add a slider over the winter of 1958-59. The Dodgers called him up on July 4, 1959; he finished 7-2 with a 2.19 ERA and was voted Most Valuable Player of the 1959 World Series, the first relief pitcher to take the award, after working all four Los Angeles wins over the Chicago White Sox - two victories, two saves, a 0.71 ERA across 12 2/3 innings. On May 7, 1960, he and Norm became the first and only Jewish brother battery in major league history. He retired at 53-44 with a 3.67 ERA, 82 saves and 606 strikeouts in 416 games, later managing and coaching in the minors and serving as pitching coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates and California Angels. The Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1993.
