About Mickey Vernon
1963 Topps #402 belongs to the fifth series and to the set's manager run, the last of Vernon's three Topps cards in the decade. His third year in Washington barely got going: the club was 14-26 and last in the ten-team American League when he was fired on May 21, 1963. Two days later the Senators traded Jimmy Piersall to the Mets to bring in Gil Hodges as his replacement, and still finished 56-106. Vernon's time in the chair left him 135-227, a .373 winning percentage, though he stayed in the game into the 1980s as a big league coach, a minor league manager and a batting instructor.
James Barton Vernon was called Mickey from about age three, when an aunt in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania borrowed the name from a song the boy played over and over on the family Victrola. Tall, lean and left-handed, he was a first baseman of unusual grace. He spent a year at Villanova, signed first with the St. Louis Browns organization, and became Washington property when Senators super-scout Joe Cambria signed him after the 1937 season. He debuted on July 8, 1939 and lasted 20 big league seasons, losing 1944 and 1945 to the Navy. He won the American League batting title in 1946 at .353, eleven points clear of Ted Williams, then again in 1953 at .337, one point ahead of Al Rosen and enough to deny Rosen the Triple Crown. A seven-time All-Star, he finished with 2,495 hits and a .286 average and held American League career records for first basemen in games, putouts, assists and total chances, plus the major league record for double plays at the position. After stops in Cleveland, Boston and Milwaukee he coached first base for the 1960 champion Pirates, pinch-hit in nine September games to close out his playing days, and took a World Series ring without being eligible to play in the Series itself.
