1963 Topps #254 Mike Hershberger

About Mike Hershberger
Card 254 is a plain third-series number in the 1963 Topps set. The season it stands over was the best he had at the plate as a regular: 135 games for the Chicago White Sox, a .279 average, 133 hits, 26 doubles and 64 runs scored. He moved around the outfield all summer, 72 games in center and 76 in right, and the contact hitting that became his signature was already in place, just 39 strikeouts in 476 at-bats.
Norman Michael Hershberger, born October 9, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio, played eleven major-league seasons as a right-handed outfielder for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Milwaukee Brewers, closing out his career with a second stint in Chicago in 1971. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School, where he was a Tiger football halfback, and took a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati before signing with the White Sox in 1959. He reached the majors on September 5, 1961, and was known above all for his defense and for one of the strongest, most accurate outfield arms of his era. He held a starting corner outfield job for seven straight years, 1962 through 1968, split between Chicago and the Athletics. Over 1,150 games he batted .252 with 900 hits, 150 doubles, 22 triples, 26 home runs and 344 runs batted in, striking out only 311 times in 3,572 at-bats. Massillon named him a Distinguished Citizen in 2021. He died in his hometown on July 1, 2012, at 72.
