1963 Topps #445 Norm Cash

About Norm Cash
Card #4 is the 1962 American League home run leaders card, a first-series entry placing Cash second behind Harmon Killebrew and ahead of Rocky Colavito, Leon Wagner, Jim Gentile and Roger Maris. His solo #445 comes from the fifth series. Both report the year his average collapsed to .243, a 118-point fall from his title mark and the largest ever by a batting champion, though he still hit 39 home runs with 89 RBI.
Norman Dalton Cash reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1958 and sat on their 1959 American League pennant winners. Chicago packaged him to Cleveland that December in the Minnie Minoso deal, and the following April, before Cash had played an inning for the Indians, Cleveland sent him on to Detroit for Steve Demeter, who lasted four more major league games. Cash held down first base for the Tigers for the next fifteen seasons. Ernie Harwell hung the nickname on him, borrowed from a Baltimore man of the same name, after a rare flare of temper. He was a five-time All-Star, the 1961 American League batting champion and a World Series winner in 1968, and he later admitted cheerfully to filling hollowed-out bats with cork, sawdust and glue. He was the only American Leaguer to hit 20 or more home runs in every season from 1961 through 1969, led the league in fielding twice and in assists three times, and finished with 377 home runs, fourth most by a left-handed hitter in league history behind Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig. Detroit released him in August 1974, and he drowned in 1986 after falling from a dock at Beaver Island, Michigan. Cash is in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
