1963 Topps #489 Paul Toth

About Paul Toth
Card 489 is a semi-high number from series six and is Toth's rookie card, issued during his lone full big-league season. Pitching for the Cubs, he worked 27 games with 14 starts and posted a 3.10 ERA, including two shutouts.
Paul Louis Toth was a right-handed pitcher born in McRoberts, Kentucky, who moved to Youngstown, Ohio, as a boy and was scouted by the Cardinals at East High School there, signing with St. Louis in 1955. He debuted in the majors with the Cardinals in April 1962, then was traded to the Chicago Cubs that September for pitcher Harvey Branch. Toth spent all of 1963 on the Cubs roster, appearing in 27 games with 14 starts and throwing two shutouts. Two rough starts in May 1964 sent him back to the minors, and weeks later he was included, along with Lou Brock and Jack Spring, in the trade that sent him back to the Cardinals organization in exchange for Ernie Broglio, Bobby Shantz and Doug Clemens; he never returned to the majors. He finished with a 9-12 record, a 3.80 ERA and 82 strikeouts, then pitched in the minors through 1967 before spending three decades as a beer salesman and sales manager for a Toledo, Ohio distributor. He died in 1999.
