1964 Topps #231 Dick Calmus

About Dick Calmus
This 1964 Topps card, #231 in the set's third print series, catches Calmus coming off his rookie year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where his bonus-baby signing had put him straight on the big league roster out of high school. He answered with a 3-1 record and a sharp 2.66 ERA across 21 games in 1963, holding his own on a Dodgers staff loaded with established arms. It is recognized as his rookie card.
Richard Lee Calmus, a right-handed pitcher out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a bonus baby, a rule that kept him on the major league roster straight out of high school rather than in the minors. Standing 6-foot-4, he made his debut in 1963 and turned in a strong rookie season, going 3-1 with a 2.66 ERA across 21 games for a Dodgers pitching staff built around veteran arms. Arm trouble developed in the minors afterward, and he did not pitch in the majors again until a brief 1967 stint with the Chicago Cubs, where he appeared in a single game. His career closed with a 3-1 record and a 3.17 ERA over 22 games. At Tulsa's Webster High School he had been a standout basketball player and won two state baseball titles alongside future big leaguer Carl Morton. He is the uncle of Rocky Calmus, the Butkus Award-winning linebacker.
