1964 Topps #559 Dick Phillips

About Dick Phillips
Phillips remained the Senators' first baseman in 1964, starting 61 games there in his second full season with the club. Topps again placed him in the high-number series 7, this time on card #559, a solo issue since his card debut had come the year before.
Richard Eugene Phillips (1931-1998), a native of Racine, Wisconsin, played outfield, first base, second base and shortstop across a professional career that ran from 1951 to 1967, interrupted by three years in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, including combat service. He spent a decade in the minor leagues, mostly in the Milwaukee Braves and San Francisco Giants systems, before winning the 1961 Pacific Coast League MVP award and reaching the majors in 1962 with the Giants at age 30. His contract was later sold to the Washington Senators, where he became a regular first baseman. His career major league totals were a .229 batting average with 136 hits, 12 home runs and 60 RBIs over parts of four seasons. After his playing days ended he stayed in the game for three more decades as a manager, coach, scout and broadcaster for the Twins, Padres and Brewers organizations, managing clubs from Honolulu to Vancouver.
