About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

Parker's first Topps card, and his recognized rookie card, arrived as a Dodgers Rookie Stars card shared with fellow rookie John Werhas in Topps' sixth series. After a standout spring training in 1964, Parker made the Opening Day roster and split time between right field and first base as a 24-year-old, batting .257 with 29 runs scored over 124 games for the defending World Series champions. Six-time Gold Glove first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wes Parker anchored two World Series clubs in 1965-66 and turned in a signature 1970 season, batting .319 with 111 RBI and a cycle against the Mets.

Werhas' 1964 Topps Rookie Stars card, #456, pictures him with fellow Dodgers prospect Wes Parker. It comes from the set's sixth print series and stands as Werhas' rookie card. That season he won the Dodgers' starting third base job out of spring training, appearing in 29 games and batting .193 with 8 RBIs before a demotion to Spokane, where he hit .309 with nine home runs. A USC All-American third baseman and basketball standout drafted by the Lakers, John Werhas signed with the Dodgers instead, reaching the majors in 1964 and finishing his career with the Angels in 1967 after a stint in Japan.

587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
