1964 Topps #497 Jeoff Long

About Jeoff Long
Long broke camp with the Cardinals in 1964 after a strong spring and spent the season's first two months as a spot starter and pinch hitter at first base and in right field. His career highlight came May 15 against Milwaukee, when he hit his only major league home run, a two-run shot off knuckleballer Bobby Tiefenauer that helped St. Louis to a 10-6 win. He kept getting occasional starts through late May before settling into pinch-hit-only duty, and St. Louis sold his contract to the White Sox on July 7 to make room for Mike Shannon. This No. 497 card comes from series 6 and is a recognized rookie card for Long, his only Topps issue.
Jeoff Long was a burly first baseman/outfielder from Covington, Kentucky, who signed with the Cardinals in 1959 as a hard-throwing pitcher out of Lloyd Memorial High School. Wildness and arm trouble ended that experiment, and a conversion to first base unlocked serious power: he blasted 30 home runs for Double-A Tulsa in 1962. The Cardinals called him up in July 1963 as a right-handed pinch hitter, and he stuck with the club through 1964, filling in at first base and the outfield corners. St. Louis sold his contract to the White Sox that July to clear a roster spot for Mike Shannon. Long's career was shaped by knee trouble that dated to a high school football injury; he badly reinjured it slipping on a wet field in Boston in his first game in left field for the White Sox, which limited him the rest of that season and led to three lost rehab years before a brief comeback attempt. He finished with 56 major league games and 16 hits. Afterward he returned to Kentucky and joined his family's Cincinnati Drum Service business.
