The story on this card
Topps put Ackley in the 1964 set at #368, a Rookie Stars card shared with White Sox teammate Don Buford, and it is his recognized rookie card. He opened the year on Chicago's staff but lasted three games and two starts, an 8.53 earned run average across 6 1/3 innings, and made his final major league appearance on May 9. His lone at-bat that season was a hit that drove in a run. Fritz Ackley won 18 games and a Pitcher of the Year award for Indianapolis in 1963, then pitched five times for the Chicago White Sox, beating Washington that September for his only major league victory.
In his 1964 Topps Rookie Stars card, #368, Buford shares the frame with fellow White Sox rookie Fritz Ackley. Buford broke in as a 27-year-old rookie infielder after leading the International League in hitting at Indianapolis, and split time at second base with Al Weis while filling in at third whenever Pete Ward needed a rest, hitting .262 in his first full season. A slap-and-walk infielder for the White Sox before Baltimore moved him to the outfield, where his patient bat sparked three straight Orioles pennant-winners and earned him his only All-Star selection in 1971.
