The story on this card
This is card #386 in the fifth print series of the 1965 Topps set, a multi-player Rookie Stars card with a horizontal front that he shares with Fred Norman. It followed his September 1964 debut with the Cubs, where he went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over four relief appearances. Injury trouble struck that spring, when he hurt his rotator cuff, and he never got back to the majors. The card is recognized as his rookie card. Right-handed pitcher Paul Jaeckel, known as Jake Jaeckel, went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over four games for the 1964 Chicago Cubs, his only big-league trial.
This 1965 Topps card again catches Norman with the Chicago Cubs, for whom he made two brief relief appearances in 1966 and one more in 1967 before the club moved on from him. Card #386 is a print-series-five Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Cubs prospect Paul Jaeckel, and it is Jaeckel's rookie card. A 5-foot-8 screwball pitcher who remade himself after a shoulder injury and became a durable Big Red Machine starter, winning two World Series with Cincinnati in the mid-1970s.
