1965 Topps #565 Ernie Broglio

About Ernie Broglio
Surgery in November 1964 took bone chips and a damaged ulnar nerve out of Broglio's right elbow, and the Cubs had him back in camp in February with roughly three months of rest; he later called that the decision that shortened his career. He worked 26 games in 1965, only six of them starts, and finished 1-6 with a 6.93 ERA in barely 50 innings. Card #565 pictures him with Chicago and sits in the set's high-number series, inside its short-print zone.
Ernest Gilbert Broglio was born in Berkeley, California, on August 27, 1935, and moved with his family to El Cerrito in 1945. He signed out of El Cerrito High School with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks in 1953, won 20 games for Stockton in 1955, then landed in the New York Giants chain and went 17-6 for the Dallas Eagles in 1957. A five-player swap sent the right-hander to the St. Louis Cardinals on October 8, 1958. He debuted on April 11, 1959, and broke through the next season at 21-9 with a 2.74 earned run average, tying Warren Spahn for the National League lead in wins, finishing second in ERA and third in the Cy Young vote, and taking the league's Sophomore of the Year award. A sore right shoulder and close to twenty cortisone shots dragged him to 9-12 in 1961, but he rebuilt his arm and won 18 games in 1963. On June 15, 1964, St. Louis sent him, Bobby Shantz and Doug Clemens to the Chicago Cubs for Lou Brock, Jack Spring and Paul Toth. Elbow surgery followed that November, Broglio won only seven more games, and the swap became the standard example of a lopsided trade. He finished 77-74 with a 3.74 ERA and died July 16, 2019.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #565 card?
It is card #565 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Ernie Broglio of the Chicago Cubs.
Is 1965 Topps #565 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
