About Jeff Torborg

Moved up to second-string catcher in 1965, Torborg had his signature moment that September when he caught Sandy Koufax's perfect game against the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium, the fourth straight season Koufax threw a no-hitter. His 1965 Topps card, #527, is a high number from the seventh series, inside the set's short-print zone.

Jeff Torborg was a catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels from 1964 to 1973, prized for handling a pitching staff rather than for his bat. A Rutgers All-American who hit .537 in his final college season, he signed with the Dodgers in 1963 and spent most of his career as a backup, not becoming a full-time starter until his last season in Anaheim. Despite the limited playing time, Torborg caught three no-hitters for three different pitchers: Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Bill Singer's 1970 no-hitter, and the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters in 1973, making him one of a handful of catchers to catch a no-hitter in each league. He finished his playing days with a .214 average, 8 home runs and 101 RBI over ten seasons. Torborg went on to a long second career as a manager, coach and broadcaster, leading the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, and won American League Manager of the Year with the White Sox in 1990.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1965 Topps #527 card?

It is card #527 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Jeff Torborg of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Is 1965 Topps #527 a scarce card?

It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.

How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?

598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
