1965 Topps #298 Jim Stewart

About Jim Stewart
Coming off his career-high 1964 output, Stewart settled into a part-time role for the 1965 Cubs, playing mostly outfield and shortstop while his average slipped to .223 over 116 games. This card, from the fourth print series of the 1965 set, keeps him with Chicago.
James Franklin Stewart was a switch-hitting utility infielder-outfielder who spent ten major league seasons, 1963 to 1973, with the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros. Signed by the Cubs out of Austin Peay State College, where he had starred in baseball, basketball and track, he broke in with Chicago in September 1963 and logged his busiest season there in 1964. Traded around the diamond for the rest of his career, he played every position but pitcher, earning the nickname Super Sub with the Reds for his willingness to fill in anywhere. He appeared in the 1970 National League Championship Series and World Series for Cincinnati, closing out his playing days with Houston in 1972 and 1973. He finished with a .237 career average over 777 games, then spent decades afterward as a minor league manager and major league scout for the Reds and Phillies.
