The story on this card
By the following spring Bennett was back in the minors, optioned to Arkansas and then Chattanooga after his lone Phillies outing, still just nineteen and viewed as a promising power arm. His second card is another high-number Rookie Stars issue, this time pairing him with fellow prospect Morrie Steevens, both still climbing through the Phillies system; it is Steevens' rookie card. A hard-throwing 6-foot-5 righty who signed for a $70,000 bonus and pitched a single relief inning for the 1964 Phillies, striking out one batter, alongside his brother Dennis.
Card #521 is a high number from the seventh print series, a Philadelphia Phillies Rookie Stars card shared with fellow pitcher Dave Bennett and recognized as Steevens' rookie card. It reflects his 1965 season, in which he made the Phillies' Opening Day roster but struggled in April before being optioned to the Triple-A Arkansas Travelers, where he won seven games with a 3.02 ERA. Recalled in September, he appeared in a single big-league game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, his final major-league outing, before a calcium deposit on his collarbone forced season-ending surgery. A left-handed pitcher from Illinois who worked through a decade in the minors, twice threw no-hitters, and reached the majors with the Cubs and Phillies before a collarbone injury cut his career short.
