About Sterling Slaughter
Card number 314 in the fourth print series carries Sterling Slaughter as a Chicago Cub, reporting back on his 1964 rookie season: 20 games, six starts, a 2-4 record, a 5.75 ERA, one complete game, and 32 strikeouts over 51.2 innings, highlighted by a complete-game win over Milwaukee. The card's back stat table is laid out with a batting-style heading even though Slaughter's contribution came entirely as a pitcher.
Sterling Feore Slaughter Jr. was a right-handed pitcher born November 18, 1941, in Danville, Illinois. He stood 5 feet 11 inches and weighed 165 pounds. Slaughter graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in education in 1963, the same year he led the Double-A Texas League in earned run average at 3.00. He reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1964, his only big-league season, appearing in 20 games, six as a starter. He finished 2-4 with a 5.75 ERA over 51.2 innings, striking out 32 batters and completing one game. Both of his career wins came against the Milwaukee Braves, including a complete-game 5-2 victory at Milwaukee County Stadium on June 5, in which he allowed just one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out eight. Slaughter is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
