The story on this card

1965 Topps #201 pairs rookie Sandy Valdespino with fellow Twins rookie Cesar Tovar on a shared Rookie Stars card from the set's third series, a recognized rookie card. That year Valdespino hit .261 in 108 games as a 26-year-old outfielder for the pennant-winning Twins, then appeared in five 1965 World Series games versus the Dodgers, doubling off Don Drysdale in the Game One rout. Cuban-born outfielder signed by Joe Cambria in 1957, Sandy Valdespino reached the majors with the 1965 pennant-winning Twins after eight minor league seasons, then played parts of six more years with four other clubs before finishing with a .230 career average.

This Rookie Stars card, shared with fellow Twin Sandy Valdespino, marks Tovar's first Topps issue and is a recognized rookie card, part of the set's third print series. Tovar made his major league debut with Minnesota on April 12, 1965 after coming over in an offseason trade with Cincinnati, and appeared in 18 games that season, batting .200 with three runs scored as a September call-up. A Venezuelan utility man known for relentless hustle and defensive versatility, Cesar Tovar led off for Minnesota Twins division winners in 1969 and 1970 and once played all nine positions in a single game.
