1965 Topps #344 Wes Parker

About Wes Parker
Parker's 1965 Topps card, issued in the set's fourth series, catches him in his first full season as the Dodgers' regular first baseman. He appeared in a career-high-to-that-point 154 games, batting .238 with 51 RBI and an on-base percentage of .334, then hit .304 in the World Series as Los Angeles beat the Minnesota Twins in seven games.
Wes Parker played nine seasons at first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, from his 1964 debut through 1972. A switch-hitter out of Brentwood, California and USC, he built a reputation as one of the smoothest-fielding first basemen of his era, winning six consecutive National League Gold Glove Awards from 1967 through 1972 and the 1972 Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. His signature season came in 1970, when he hit .319, drove in 111 runs while hitting only 10 home runs, and hit for the cycle against the New York Mets. Parker appeared in the 1965 and 1966 World Series, helping the Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins in seven games in 1965 before losing to the Baltimore Orioles in 1966. He finished his career with a .267 average, 64 home runs and 470 RBI over 1,288 games. After retiring following the 1972 season, Parker played a year in Japan for the Nankai Hawks, winning that league's top defensive award as well. He is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
