1966 Topps #443 Bill Wakefield

About Bill Wakefield
Issued in the set's fifth print series, this card again shows Wakefield with the Mets, carrying forward the 1964 season that remained his only major-league campaign: 62 appearances (a club record), a 3-5 mark, 3.61 ERA and two saves as Stengel's top reliever, capped by a start in Shea Stadium's first night game and an appearance in the pennant-deciding season finale against the Cardinals.
William Sumner Wakefield, born May 24, 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri, pitched right-handed for one season in the major leagues. A Pembroke Country-Day and Stanford product, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1961 and worked his way through Lancaster, Tulsa and Atlanta before a November 1963 trade sent him and George Altman to the New York Mets for Roger Craig. In 1964 the 6-foot, 175-pound right-hander made the Mets out of spring training and became Casey Stengel's workhorse, appearing in 62 games, a club record that stood for 13 years. He posted a 3-5 record with a 3.61 ERA and two saves, working almost exclusively out of the bullpen after a rough four-start trial as a starter. His final big-league appearance came on the dramatic last day of the 1964 season, against the pennant-bound Cardinals who had originally signed him.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
