The story on this card
Barnowski's 1966 Topps Rookie Stars card, #442, paired him with fellow Orioles farmhand Eddie Watt as part of the set's fifth print series. It marked his first Topps issue, arriving after his September 1965 debut with Baltimore, where he worked four relief innings and allowed just one earned run. He returned to the Orioles for a second late-season trial in 1966, adding two more relief appearances after a strong year pitching for Triple-A Rochester. A hard-throwing Orioles farmhand who twice earned a September call-up to Baltimore, working strictly in relief before control trouble and military service cut his big league window short.
Card 442 is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue pairing Watt with fellow Orioles hopeful Ed Barnowski, from the set's fifth print series, and it is a recognized rookie card for both men. It arrived in the year Watt made the Orioles out of spring training under manager Hank Bauer, splitting time between starting and relieving; he went 9-7 with a 3.83 ERA over 43 games, 13 as a starter, and was part of Baltimore's World Series championship club that swept the Los Angeles Dodgers that fall. A steady Baltimore Orioles reliever of the late 1960s and early 1970s, he anchored the bullpen through four pennants and two World Series championships before closing his career with the Phillies and Cubs.
