About Tommie Sisk

Card #441 sits in the fifth series of the 1966 Topps set, and its back finally has something to brag about. Sisk went 7-3 in 1965 for a .700 winning percentage, the best of any season he pitched, with a 3.40 ERA over 38 games and 12 starts. The high point came on a Monday night at Forbes Field, September 20, when he beat the New York Mets 10-0 on a two-hitter -- a second-inning single by John Stephenson and a ninth-inning triple by Johnny Lewis were all they managed. It was the only complete game he threw all season, and his only shutout.

Tommie Wayne Sisk, born April 12, 1942, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, was a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander out of Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1960. He was in the majors by July 19, 1962, still 20 years old, and the debut was a rough one: he started against the New York Mets and was gone after 1 1/3 innings, charged with three runs on two hits and three walks. He stuck anyway, working out of the Pittsburgh bullpen and then the rotation for seven seasons before one-year stops with San Diego and the Chicago White Sox, who acquired him for Jerry Nyman on March 30, 1970. Across 316 games and 99 starts he went 40-49 with a 3.92 ERA, 19 complete games, four shutouts, 10 saves and 441 strikeouts in 928 1/3 innings. He was no help at the plate, hitting .094 with a single extra-base hit in 235 career at-bats, and he pitched his last big league game on June 14, 1970.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
