About Bob Chance

Card #564 sits in the seventh and final print series, the high numbers that are the hardest stretch of the set. Chance opened a second straight season with Washington but again did not last past June before a return trip to Hawaii, getting into only 37 games and batting .175 with eight runs batted in. His one big swing came on April 17, when he cleared the bases with a pinch-hit grand slam - the only home run he hit in the majors all year.

Bob Chance was a big, left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder from Statesboro, Georgia, signed by the Giants in 1960 and taken by Cleveland in the 1961 first-year player draft. He won the Eastern League Triple Crown at Class AA Charleston in 1963 and was called up that September. His 1964 rookie year with the Indians was the high point of a six-season major league career: 277 games, a .261 average, 24 home runs, 112 runs batted in. In Washington he fought his weight and a crowded first base, opening three straight seasons with the Senators and being sent down in each of them while he kept hitting at Triple-A Hawaii and Buffalo. He played 1969 and 1970 in Japan for the Sankei/Yakult Atoms, and died in Charleston, West Virginia, in 2013 at 73.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
