About Steve Ridzik

Ridzik's career wound down in 1966 after Washington sold his contract back to the Philadelphia Phillies, the club that had originally signed him in 1945. He pitched just two games for the Phillies that season, a brief coda to a long career, before retiring. This 1966 Topps card, number 294 in the set's fourth print series, pictures him with the Senators.

Steve Ridzik was a right-handed pitcher who spent parts of twelve seasons in the majors from 1950 to 1966, mostly with the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Senators. Signed by the Phillies as a teenager, he broke in during their 1950 pennant run and became a regular arm in the rotation and bullpen through the mid-1950s, going 9-6 in 1953. Philadelphia dealt him to Cincinnati in 1955, and after a stop in the Pacific Coast League the New York Giants claimed him in the Rule 5 draft, where he pitched through 1957 before his contract moved to Cleveland in 1958. He resurfaced with Washington in 1963 after developing a knuckleball, working mostly in relief over three seasons highlighted by a career-best 2.89 ERA in 1964. His playing days ended in 1966 back with the Phillies, the team that had originally signed him. Teammates and writers knew him as a tinkerer who was always adjusting his pitches, and after retiring he settled in Florida and helped organize charity events for former big leaguers.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
