The story on this card
Alyea's 1966 Topps card catches him early, coming off his September 1965 call-up to Washington, where he had homered on the very first major-league pitch he saw. He shares this Rookie Stars card with fellow Senators prospect Pete Craig. It is a recognized rookie card for Alyea, part of the set's first print series. A free-swinging outfielder who homered on the first pitch of his first big-league at-bat in 1965, then peaked with Minnesota in 1970 at .291 with 16 homers.
Craig spent most of 1966 back in Hawaii, finishing 14-13 with a 3.48 ERA for the Islanders. Recalled to Washington in September for the third straight year, he made a single major league appearance, pitching two innings against the Chicago White Sox on September 24 without a decision. It proved to be his final big league game; a shoulder issue that surfaced later that year began sapping his fastball. This 1966 Topps Rookie Stars card, number 11 from the first print series, is a recognized rookie card for Craig, who is paired on it with fellow Senators prospect Brant Alyea. Canadian right-hander from LaSalle, Ontario, who pitched for the Washington Senators in brief September call-ups across three seasons before a shoulder injury ended his career.
