About Bob Saverine

Saverine's 1966 Topps card, #312 from the fourth series, is his first in a Washington uniform. The Senators had paid $25,000 for him in the November 1965 Rule 5 draft, taking him out of the Houston organization. Gil Hodges wrote him into the starting lineup 96 times, usually at second base, and he answered with the best year of his career: 120 games, 406 at-bats, 102 hits, five home runs, 24 RBIs and a .251 average, plus 26 games at third and 11 at short. Two dates stuck to him. On June 8 at Baltimore he went hitless in 12 plate appearances in a doubleheader, an American League record, and on June 10 in Cleveland he flied to left-center for the final out of Sonny Siebert's no-hitter.

Robert Paul Saverine, born June 2, 1941 in Norwalk, Connecticut, signed with the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1959 for a $70,000 bonus after starring in baseball and basketball at Darien High School. A switch-hitting infielder-outfielder nicknamed Rabbit for his speed, he reached the majors that September as an 18-year-old pinch-runner and came around to score. He led the Appalachian League in batting at .353 as a rookie pro and stole 41 bases for Little Rock in 1961, then settled in as the utilityman: three infield positions and two outfield spots. Assigned outright to Triple-A Rochester in 1965 and drafted by Washington out of the Houston organization that November, he spent 1966 and 1967 with the Senators, where he and 6-foot-7 Frank Howard also played on a team basketball squad. Over six major-league seasons and 379 games, Saverine hit .239 with 6 home runs and 23 stolen bases. He retired after a 1968 season at Triple-A Buffalo, then worked roughly two decades as a stockbroker.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
