About Dave Roberts

Selected by Pittsburgh in the minor-league draft after his monster 1965 season at Oklahoma City, Roberts opened 1966 on the Pirates' roster as a reserve behind Donn Clendenon and Willie Stargell. He struggled at the plate and was sent to Triple-A Columbus by mid-May, batting just .125 in his brief look with the Bucs - his final major-league at-bats. By the time his card reached packs, Topps had already committed him to Pittsburgh; card #571 landed in the high-number seventh series; Roberts had already appeared on his 1963 Topps issue. He went on to hit 26 home runs for Columbus that summer before signing to play in Japan the following year.

David Leonard Roberts, born June 30, 1933, in Panama City, Panama, was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder whose professional career spanned over two decades. Signed out of Panama in 1952 by Negro Leagues pitcher-turned-manager Chet Brewer, he moved through the Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Braves farm systems, briefly quit the game after a rough 1961 season, then returned in 1962 on an offer from the expansion Houston Colt .45s organization. He reached the majors that September at age 29, splitting time between Houston and Triple-A Oklahoma City in 1962 and 1964, plus a brief 1966 stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates after they took him in the minor-league draft (he spent 1963 and 1965 entirely in the minors). A .319 season for Oklahoma City in 1965 - 38 home runs, 114 RBI - earned him Minor League Player of the Year and Pacific Coast League MVP honors. His major-league totals were modest: a .196 batting average with 2 home runs and 17 RBI. He later starred in Japan for the Sankei Atoms and the Kintetsu Buffaloes from 1967 to 1973, hitting 183 home runs there. He died in 2021.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
