1966 Topps #464 Larry Bearnarth

About Larry Bearnarth
Another scoreless Grapefruit League spring and a winning season debut, two clean innings against Atlanta, promised better, but home runs wrecked what followed: 11 in 54 2/3 innings, more than double the league rate. On August 3 he recorded one out while allowing a single and two homers, one of them a grand slam by Jim Ray Hart, and that was his next-to-last National League appearance; four days later the Mets optioned him to Triple-A Jacksonville. His fourth and final season in New York ended 2-3 with a 4.45 ERA and no saves in 29 games. His 1966 Topps card is #464, from the sixth series.
Lawrence Donald Bearnarth was a right-handed sinkerball pitcher who spent five major-league seasons, four of them with the New York Mets. Born in New York City and raised in Brooklyn and then on Staten Island, he starred at St. Peter's Boys High School and at St. John's University, where he went 32-2 under coach Jack Kaiser and graduated with a degree in English literature. He turned down pro offers out of high school, then signed with the Mets in June 1962 for a $17,000 bonus as the young franchise's first bonus player. Heavy rookie-season use was followed by the arm trouble that cut his career short: he pitched for New York through 1966, spent four years back in Triple-A, and made two last appearances for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1971, finishing 13-21 with a 4.13 ERA and eight saves in 173 games. He coached from the early 1970s to the end of the 1990s, working as a Montreal Expos minor-league instructor and pitching coach, the first pitching coach in Colorado Rockies history, and finally a Detroit Tigers scout.
