1966 Topps #289 Larry Sherry

About Larry Sherry
Sherry's 20 saves in 1966 were a career high and third-best in the American League, earned over 55 appearances in which he finished 39 games. Detroit used three managers that summer after Chuck Dressen's May heart attack and Bob Swift's midseason cancer diagnosis - both men died before the year was out - yet the Tigers still finished third at 88-74. Sherry went 8-5 with a 3.82 ERA behind a lineup of Al Kaline, Norm Cash and Bill Freehan. Card #289 sits in the fourth series.
Larry Sherry (born July 25, 1935, in Los Angeles; died December 17, 2006, in Mission Viejo, California) was a right-handed relief pitcher who worked in the major leagues from 1958 to 1968 for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and California Angels. Born with clubfeet that needed surgery in infancy and corrective shoes afterward, he starred at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, then spent years grinding through the minors until his older brother, catcher Norm Sherry, helped him add a slider over the winter of 1958-59. The Dodgers called him up on July 4, 1959; he finished 7-2 with a 2.19 ERA and was voted Most Valuable Player of the 1959 World Series, the first relief pitcher to take the award, after working all four Los Angeles wins over the Chicago White Sox - two victories, two saves, a 0.71 ERA across 12 2/3 innings. On May 7, 1960, he and Norm became the first and only Jewish brother battery in major league history. He retired at 53-44 with a 3.67 ERA, 82 saves and 606 strikeouts in 416 games, later managing and coaching in the minors and serving as pitching coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates and California Angels. The Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1993.
