About Manny Jimenez

A non-roster invitee to Athletics camp in 1966, Jimenez hit his way onto the club and was penciled in to start Opening Day at Minnesota, then held out for $10,000 against Charlie Finley's $8,000 offer and was scratched from the lineup two hours before the first pitch. He won the raise and little else: 4-for-35, a .114 average in 13 games, and a waiver on May 13, after which Kansas City loaned him to Detroit's organization, where he hit .288 in 110 games for Syracuse. His 1966 Topps card, number 458, shows him with the Athletics and comes from the sixth series. The front spells his surname "Jiminez."

Manny Jimenez, born Manuel Emilio Jimenez Rivera on November 19, 1936, in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, was an outfielder who threw right-handed but hit left-handed after the Milwaukee Braves converted him, and who built a reputation as one of his era's best pure hitters: he won the Northern League batting title at .340 for Eau Claire in 1958 and hit .325 for Vancouver in the Pacific Coast League in 1961. Traded to the Kansas City Athletics that December, he reached the majors in 1962 and played for the Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago Cubs across parts of seven seasons through 1969, finishing at .272 with 26 home runs and 144 RBIs in 429 games. Nicknamed "El Mulo" (The Mule) for his strength and the way he kicked up his front leg at the plate, a name that also nodded at his stubborn streak, he became the first Dominican to homer three times in a big-league game. Clashes with managers and front offices over money, playing time, and discipline shadowed a career that never matched his raw hitting talent. His brother Elvio also reached the majors, appearing in one game for the 1964 Yankees. Jimenez entered the Dominican Republic's Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and died in New York on December 11, 2017, at 81.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
