About Phil Roof

Cleveland packaged Roof with a young Joe Rudi and shipped both to Kansas City at the 1965 winter meetings, and the trade finally handed him a job: he beat out incumbent Billy Bryan and caught 123 games for the A's. His first big-league home run, a two-run shot in the twelfth inning, beat Washington 5-3 on May 23; a week later his two-run double broke up Denny McLain's no-hit bid. He set career highs of 127 games, 77 hits, 14 doubles and 44 RBI while batting .209. Topps #382, from the fifth series, is his first card of his own after three straight multi-player Rookie Stars panels.

Phil Roof was a defense-first catcher whose glove and throwing arm kept him in the majors for 15 seasons while his bat rarely did. Born in Paducah, Kentucky on March 5, 1941, he signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1959 out of St. Mary High School and debuted at 20, catching the ninth inning of an April 29, 1961 loss to the Giants without ever getting to hit. Two one-game looks with the Braves and a trade to the Los Angeles Angels left him a spare part; only a winter-meetings deal after the 1965 season, moving him from Cleveland to the Kansas City Athletics, finally gave him a regular job. He caught for that franchise through its move to Oakland, then worked for Milwaukee, Minnesota, Chicago and Toronto, becoming the first player the expansion Blue Jays ever acquired. He retired in 1977 with a .215 average, 43 home runs and 210 RBI across 857 games, but also a .986 fielding mark and real arm strength: in 1974 he threw out 48.8 percent of would-be base stealers, second among American League catchers. He later coached in four big-league bullpens and managed 16 years in the Twins chain, winning his 1,000th game as a manager in 2004.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
