1966 Topps #559 Roberto Pena

About Roberto Pena
Pena opened 1966 on the Cubs roster and appeared in six games, including a start at Los Angeles where he doubled twice off Sandy Koufax. An error in a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers preceded his final Cubs appearance, and he was optioned to the minors for the rest of the year. This Chicago Cubs card comes from the scarce seventh and final high-numbered series of the set; his rookie card is the 1965 issue.
Roberto Pena was a Dominican shortstop who reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1965 after signing out of the Pittsburgh system and starring for the Aguilas Cibaenas in his homeland. His rookie debut was a wild one: three hits, a home run off Bob Gibson, three errors and three RBIs in an 11-inning tie. He struggled to hold the Cubs job against a strong defensive field and moved on to the Phillies, where in 1968 he became the majors first Dominican everyday shortstop. He started the inaugural game in San Diego Padres history in 1969, then went to the Oakland Athletics and Milwaukee Brewers, hitting the first grand slam in Brewers history. Over six big league seasons he played shortstop, second base, third base and first base. He is remembered in the Dominican Republic as a standout winter-league shortstop for the Aguilas Cibaenas, who later retired his uniform number.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
