1967 Topps #557 Al Ferrara

About Al Ferrara
1967 was Ferrara's breakout year as an everyday Dodger: he set career highs with 16 home runs and a .277 average while driving in 50 runs, and was named the team's Dodger of the Year. His 1967 Topps card, #557, is a high number from the set's seventh and final print series, issued as he became a full-time regular in Los Angeles.
Al Ferrara was a Brooklyn-born outfielder who spent most of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers before finishing up with the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds. A classically trained pianist as a boy, he gave up the keyboard for baseball as a teenager and signed with the Dodgers out of Long Island University. He broke in in 1963 and won a World Series ring that year without appearing in the Series itself, then worked his way into the everyday lineup by 1967, when he hit a career-high 16 home runs and was named Dodger of the Year. An ankle injury suffered chasing a fly ball in 1968 ended his Dodgers tenure, and the Padres took him in the October 1968 expansion draft, where he became one of the original Padres and turned in two of his most productive full seasons at the plate. He retired after 1971 with a .259 career average and later worked in the Dodgers' community relations department.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1967 Topps #557 card?
It is card #557 of the 609-card 1967 Topps Baseball set, picturing Al Ferrara of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Why is #557 harder to find?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last print series, #534-609 - the scarce end of the set, holding both Hall of Fame rookies (Carew #569, Seaver #581). Twenty-two of the 76 are accepted double prints, so scarcity varies card by card inside the run.

609 cards, tracked as 624 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 609 without a gap - no number was skipped and none was used twice - and 15 cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
