This is one of the twenty manager cards in the 1967 Topps set - one for each of the twenty franchises.
About Harry Walker
Card #448 in the fifth series carries Walker's final season managing the Pirates, a club bolstered in the offseason by a trade for shortstop Maury Wills. When Pittsburgh slid to a .500 record by midseason, Walker was let go on July 18 in favor of his predecessor, Danny Murtaugh. Within a week he landed with the Houston Astros organization as batting coach, a post that put him in position to take over as their manager the following June.
Harry Walker broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1940 and spent 11 seasons in the National League as an outfielder for the Cardinals, Phillies, Cubs and Reds. A left-handed slap hitter who chose contact over power, he made two All-Star teams and won the 1947 batting title with the Phillies at .363. The year before, he drove in the Series-winning run for the world champion Cardinals in a memorable Game Seven at bat. He and his older brother Fred are the only brothers in major league history to each win a batting championship. Walker's habit of fussing with his cap between pitches earned him the nickname Harry the Hat. He finished his playing days with a .296 average and 786 hits over 807 games, then moved into managing, first taking over the Cardinals as a player-manager in 1955 before later piloting the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros.
