About Jim Hicks

1967 Topps #532 shows Hicks with the Chicago White Sox, reflecting his big-league time with the club in 1965 and 1966, when he saw brief outfield and first-base duty after debuting as a pinch runner in 1964. The card falls in the print run's sixth series. It is recognized as Hicks' rookie card, his first Topps appearance after six seasons in the White Sox farm system.

James Edward Hicks was a 6-foot-3, 205-pound outfielder and first baseman who threw and batted right-handed. Born in East Chicago, Indiana, he attended the University of Illinois before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 1959. Hicks spent six seasons in the White Sox farm system before making his major league debut in 1964. He appeared in parts of three seasons with Chicago, then had his contract sold to the St. Louis Cardinals organization after the 1967 minor league season. In 1968 he was named Most Valuable Player of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League while playing for the Tulsa Oilers, batting .366 with 23 home runs. That performance set up his only full major league season in 1969, split between the Cardinals and California Angels after a May trade for outfielder Vic Davalillo. He played briefly with the Angels in 1970 before finishing his career with Hawaii of the Pacific Coast League and two seasons in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball with Hiroshima.
