About Ken Harrelson

In 1967 Harrelson opened the season with Washington, returned briefly to Kansas City, then was released after publicly calling owner Charlie Finley "a menace to baseball." Signed by Boston for a lucrative sum, he helped the Red Sox win the pennant before losing the World Series to St. Louis. His 1967 Topps card, #188, from the set's second series, pictures him with the Senators.

Kenneth Smith Harrelson, born September 4, 1941 in Woodruff, South Carolina, played nine major league seasons (1963-1971) as a first baseman and outfielder for the Kansas City Athletics, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Signed by Kansas City out of high school, he reached the majors in 1963 and became known as "Hawk" for his distinctive profile. Outspoken criticism of Athletics owner Charlie Finley led to his release in 1967, and he signed with Boston for a lucrative sum, helping the Red Sox win the pennant that year before losing the World Series to St. Louis. In 1968 he had his finest season, leading the American League in RBI and earning his only All-Star selection. Traded to Cleveland in 1969, he retired mid-season in 1971 after a broken leg limited his mobility. Harrelson finished with a .239 average, 131 home runs and 421 RBI in 900 games, and is credited with helping popularize the batting glove. He later spent decades as a Chicago White Sox broadcaster.
