1967 Topps #273 Dick Lines

About Dick Lines
In 1967, his second full season with Washington, Lines worked exclusively in relief, going 2-5 with a 3.36 ERA and four saves over 85 2/3 innings across 54 appearances, and struck out 54 batters. Topps issued his first card that year, #273 in the third series, picturing him with the Senators; it stands as his rookie card, arriving after he had already logged a full season in the Washington bullpen the year before.
Richard George Lines, born August 17, 1938 in Montreal, Quebec, emigrated to the United States as an infant and grew up in Midlothian, Virginia, graduating from Manchester High School. The left-handed pitcher, listed at 6 feet 1 inch and 175 pounds, signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization before the 1957 season and spent eight years starting in the minor leagues before the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League converted him to relief work in 1965. That December, while working for a meat distributor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Lines fractured his big toe when he dropped 30 pounds of frozen spare ribs on his left foot, but he recovered in time to make the Washington Senators out of spring training in 1966. He pitched two full seasons in relief for Washington, appearing in 107 games without ever starting, and closed out his major league career with a 7-7 record, six saves, a 2.83 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 168 2/3 innings. He was never selected to an All-Star team and is not a Hall of Famer.
